The small town of Västervik is located on the East Coast of Småland at the Baltic Sea. It is a popular place in the summertime and mostly known for its untouched Archipelago. The Archipelago is a cluster of around 5,000 rocky and mostly forested islands. The scenery is really beautiful and varies a lot. Several ferries take you from the city through the wild and raw nature of the Archipelago to two archipelago islands: Hasselö and Idö.
#1 Västervik’s Old Town
Västervik’s cobbled streets and alleys and the pastel-colored wooden houses invite you to stroll around and explore the city by foot. We started our day with some breakfast at Skälboden Café. The Kanelbullar (Cinnamon Rolls) and Kardemummabullar (Cardamom Rolls) are freshly handmade and so delicious ! Our visit included stops at the Båtmansstugorna ( a place of former sailor cottages from the 1740s which are located in an alley with lots of trees, flowers and a herb garden and Kulbacken (the home of the UNOS Tower, the highest point in Västervik and the museum of Västervik). Restaurang Guldkant offers great lunch menus with typical Swedish Cuisine and a wonderful archipelago view.
Västervik is a really nice place to explore, especially with smaller children, but there is much more to see in this area. Here are some of our favorite Things To Do around Västervik.
#2 Lysingsbadet Korpaholmarna
Lysingsbadet is a well-known resort and camping site located at the Baltic Sea only 4 km from downtown Västervik. From here you can follow the hiking trail which leads you through the archipelago. Via footbridges, you can walk along rocks and little islands and watch the wildlife.
#3 Gränsö Ekholmen
At the Gränsö Castle on the Gränsö Peninsula, you can find Ekholmen, a little walkable island in the Baltic Sea which is connected via a footbridge. It is located 5 km from downtown Västervik. You can walk around the complete island with stunning views of the City of Västervik and the Archipelago. This place is amazing, especially in Spring when the Lilly of the Valley and the Anemone are in full bloom.
#4 Västervik Sandvikstigen
A short hiking trail leads you through the idyllic and wild nature of a Småland forest and along the skerry coast’s bay and cliffs of the coast. It is located on the easternmost tip of the Gränsö Peninsula, 8 km from downtown Västervik.
#5 Gamleby Trollskogen
Trollskogen at Garpedansberget is a sculpture park by the artist of Jan Pol located in Gamleby, a small town at the Gulf of Gamleby ( 24 km from Västervik ). You can follow the hiking trail and explore the sculpture park which was created along a 300-meter long mountain wall in the middle of the forest.
